Photo: Cleaning the diesel particulate filter with a DPF Cleaner. The lifespan of a DPF/FAP filter. The lifespan of a DPF largely depends on how a car with the engine filter is driven, how much attention the driver pays to his/her driving style, whether they cover longer distances regularly and if they drive exclusively in the city.

The computer is left hooked to the obd II port and the regen process is started. The truck's fan turns on and the engine revs up to about 2800 rpms.
Normally, you cannot clean the diesel particulate filter yourself. This is because the risk of damaging the diesel particulate filter is very high. Although you may find several creative solutions of DIY cleaning for your diesel particulate filter, e.g. using a steam jet, we strongly recommend not doing this yourself due to the risk of damage.

I 'think' I heard the DPF can regen about 200 times before it needs cleaned, so it will depend on how hot your running an engine. Some guys are hitting 40-50 hrs between regens in some applications. There are 2 types of regeneration: passive and active. Let’s break them down. Passive Regeneration: This is the low-key kind of regeneration that happens during normal driving conditions. When you’re cruising at highway speeds, your exhaust system gets hot enough to burn off the soot particles trapped in the DPF. Rather than cleaning the DPF, the term used by professionals is ‘DPF regeneration’ as, technically, the soot particles are burnt off from the filter to ‘regenerate’ it. This usually happens automatically when the engine reaches a certain temperature — normally at motorway speed, or during a long drive if you’re driving more slowly. thats true and your manual should explain that. I believe that all diesel cars (irrespective of DPF) should be given at least 1 trip to motorway / week and if you cant do that, then at least drive it on higher RPM for at least 15-20 minutes to avoid EGR/ DPF's problems.
